During the winter months, applying rock salt (also known as road salt) to your grounds and car parks is a great way of ensuring customers can reach your business without any slips or falls.
Why should rock salt be applied?
Any occupant of a commercial property is required under the management of health & safety at work regulations 1999 (including the recent slip & trip act) to evaluate risks and take measures to protect their employees and customers from the danger that ice and snow can bring. Failing to do this may result in legal action being taken by any injured person/s slipping on your icy grounds.
Reactive and on-demand services
Gritting services can either be supplied on a regular contract basis or on-demand as and when required (by phone, e-mail or fax). Our most popular contract service allows customers to pay a flat monthly fee where all site visits and materials such as grit or ice melting gels are included.
Even though the salt may be applied dry in its usual form, it does not begin its snowfighting job until it’s had time to dissolves into brine which means it needs applying before the ice forms.
The salt works by lowering the freezing point of moisture on the road surface. Before salt can become effective, it needs to be crushed by the traffic and dissolve. It is less effective at temperatures below minus five degrees centigrade (-5°C) and has virtually no effect below -10°C therefore it must be applied at the right time which is where reactive services are better.
Other winter services
We offer various other winter services including but not limited to snow ploughing and shovelling, grit bin supply and maintenance (refills), plant frost protection services.
